London is constituted by 33 boroughs. The boroughs run most of the day-to-day services across the capital.  They are responsible for education, housing, social services, street cleaning, waste disposal, roads, local planning and many arts and leisure services.

Association of London Government. The ALG represents all 32 London boroughs, the Corporation of London, the Metropolitan Police Authority and the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, which all pay an annual subscription to cover the Association’s running costs. The ALG is consulted formally by the Government and is in an ideal position to advise on a wide range of issues relating to local government and other matters of concern to Londoners. It also works closely with the national Local Government Association and with many private, voluntary and public sector bodies.

The work of the Association of London Government (ALG) is now covered by London Councils. Their role is to fight for more resources for London and for a fairer deal for London's 33 councils. www.londoncouncils.gov.uk
